VIVA BUY MOREIA (A Sendoff to Chuck)

By Guest Poster, Jimmy

So this is how it ends, with a bang and then a whimper. NBC’s fan favorite show with a cult following Chuck signed off the airwaves for the final time on January 27th. The end was always lurking around the corner for the nerdy-Buy-More-employee-turned-Super-Spy, but until now, it’s always just been a looming fear of cancelation. Now it’s real, and when the final scene played with “Rivers and Roads” by The Head and The Heart playing in the background (which I’ve had playing on repeat for several days now), the screen faded to black and I felt an immediate nostalgic sentimentality, over the loss of one of my favorite shows.

I, as all Chuck fans did, knew that the end was always imminent, as it was the show was constantly on the bubble, never having very strong ratings. However, what it did have was one of the best fandoms in the history of television. It succeeded in such a way that shows like Firefly, Veronica Mars, and Freaks and Geeks never did. It was kept on the television airwaves by its fans until the writers could end the show on their own terms. I mean sure, the Firefly fans got us a movie, a great movie, but that isn’t exactly what Joss Whedon had in mind when he first set out to make Firefly. The fans of Chuck proved again and again their dedication to this show, and as Josh Shwartz (co-creator) said best, “Saved it with Sandwiches,” And the finale took all of the absolute greatest aspects of the show, kicked them into overdrive, and wrapped it in a package that would make us laugh, make us cry, and make sure we never forget it, which it always accomplished when it was at its best.

Being the cynical person that I am, I was completely anticipating that there would be something wrong with the finale, something cheesy, something schmaltzy, some Deus Ex Machina that would be all too convenient, but it didn’t, and in the end I was more satisfied than I ever could have hoped to be. That’s because it ended on a note that was subtle, and honest, and endearing, and it made me happy to have been a fan of this show for as long as I have been, and it exemplified everything about it that makes Chuck one of my favorite shows ever. Thank you Chuck, you’ll go on forever in our hearts, as cheesy as that sounds, but you’d prefer it that way.

Viva Buy Moreia.
