Weeds Episode 7x03 Review

Episode: 7x03 Game-Played
Overall Season Rating: B-
Episode Rating C+

This week's episode wasn't particularly bad, it just wasn't funny. Since Weeds is a comedy, that's usually a sign that things are not working. I did like that the other characters got a little more to do this week than sit around wondering about Nancy, but the show's running time really prevents any true development when you have a large cast. The best moments of the episode both included Silas. Once again, his knack for acting normal really separates him from the rest of the family. The realization that he was not fathered by the same man as Shane has really had a big impact on him.

We're three episodes in and nothing big has happened yet. I wonder why they chose to move this slowly after so much happened in the first episode. I am disappointed in Weeds because for a while it was one of the most bizarre, and brilliant comedies on TV. Now it seems like they have run out of jokes, and are just doing a show about a pathetic family. Here's hoping it picks up, I do have faith in the writers!

The episode begins with Nancy in a drug class. Ed gave her a break, and didn't send her back to jail. Instead she has to spend a few sessions hearing about the evils of drugs. We also find out that the real person in charge is a Native American. She gives Nancy one more chance by telling her she needs to find a job in the next 48 hours. If Nancy keeps skipping out on there interviews to do other things she's going to be in a lot of trouble. I mean hanging out at the new loft and changing clothes feels good I'm sure, but it can't be worth going back to prison.

Meanwhile, Nancy tells Shane that "Everyone needs to be responsible for themselves", and tells him she wants him in college. He applies to City College of New York, but it's not until he tells them he's from Denmark that they get all excited. He then goes to all the banks he can so he can get "the best deal" on a loan.  I'm not sure why a bank would give a crap about one student, and would get sucked into a competition for him, but whatever. Shane and Andy find an apartment and while it's truly a piece of crap, it's still home.

Silas is able to get a modeling job, and it turns out to be a very strange one. He walks around in a bubble what starts to deflate. He cannot breath and no one is helping him. No one even looks concerned. Andy is there thankfully, and cuts it open. The artist is elated that someone finally "acted". "No one ever acts" she says. Apparently this whole thing was just to show that people do not help others when they think it's all part of the show. Andy and the artist hit it off of course and she invites him out for drinks so she can probe his higher self. I have no doubt there will be some probing going on.

Doug meets with his Wall Street friends, and he's something of a legend to them. Doug, "the man, the myth, the machine". I do not have a good feeling about this. Last week I thought he would jump right in and begin laundering money again, but now I think his "friends" are playing him. Maybe setting him up to be the sacrificial lamb when all their illegal activities are unearthed. We also see that Nancy's sister really is a bitch. She even says she wouldn't mind swapping places with Nancy so she wouldn't have to clean mud out of cleats. Wow. She also is trying to gain legal rights to Nancy's son Stevie. This makes Nancy very upset, and she wants to go to California to get him. Hopefully, this will actually be a goal of hers that she can work towards. However, I imagine she'll just break out some how and go get him.

Speaking of evil plans. Nancy wants Andy to find drug dealers while she drops of the explosives to that dude. She finds out from Andy that no one big is really selling, and there is a "hole in the market". Oh Nancy, always coming up with schemes. Nancy does have sex with the explosives guy, so at least she's having fun on the outside. At the end of the episode Silas gets Nancy to agree to allow him to sell her weed. He'll let her in on the profit of course, but this clearly is not part of her plan. This scene between them was amazing. Silas explaining his upbringing to her with both anger and pride it was almost chilling.

I hope Silas does get a larger role in the show because he really has been the best part about it this season.
