Weeds Episode 7x02 Review

Overall Season Rating: B-
Episode Rating: B-
Episode Title: 7x02 From Trauma Cometh Something

Weeds answered a lot of the questions from last week, and while I wasn't expecting some of the events, I'm not really that impressed with them either. A friend mentioned to me that he didn't think last week's episode was very funny at all. While I don't totally agree, I would say that the show has been lacking in jokes quite a bit this season so far. There's been very a serious air about the show, and when it looks like they are trying to tell a joke it falls flat. This might be caused by the subject matter, or maybe we are so familiar with these characters that no matter what they do or say we just take it at face value.

I'll get into more detail in the spoilers section about what I liked and didn't like, but I am starting to worry about the show. As I said last week, I haven't been pleased with it since they left Agrestic, and I think those feelings will continue. New York City does offer some new opportunities but so far they have not explored that at all. In this episode for example none of the characters did anything that they could not do anywhere else. Aside from a modeling agency rep saying New York is the land of hard chizzled gods. Which is certainly is.

Spoilers below the fold.

The episode begins with Nancy trying to sleep in her new home. She is having trouble though because her roommate is having what appears to be food based phone sex. This is something that only Weeds could do properly. There has been enough strange sexual behavior in the show's past so that this seems neither odd, nor out of place. What I really liked about this scene is that they don't show us that she's on the phone until a few moments in. Before this, we are not sure if she's talking in her sleep, on the phone, or just a crazy person. It appears that she's a crazy person anyway, but still. Nancy takes the phone, speaks to the guy and then throws the battery away. This was a bit drastic, and suggested to me she doesn't plan to stay there long. Not smart to make an enemy of your roommate if you're in it for the long haul.

In the next scene we see that Ed has set up a job interview for Nancy at a lamp repair store. Which is actually a pretty good gig considering she just got out of prison. It probably helps that she looks the way she does. Con or no con, Nancy is fun to look at. She then makes a call to a mysterious man and tells him she has the grenades. Aha, the plot thickens. Just as she's getting ready to leave she hears and sees her family. That was fast! Andy, Shane, Doug, and even Silas have arrived and they are looking for her. Silas manages to see her, and she bolts out the door setting off an alarm. They don't seem to concerned about this alarm so I'm not sure what purpose it serves. Nancy gets the grenades and takes them with her to the job interview. Her concern over their well being causes her to be extra nervous, and she doesn't get the job.

Meanwhile Andy and Shane are looking through Nancy's room. This clearly is against the rules, but no one seems to mind. The roommate comes in very angry that they've been poking around, and of course her and Andy have a moment. Or do they? She ends up stealing his wallet, so take that anyway you want. Nancy has arrived at the apartment of the dude who wants the grenades. As it turns out, Nancy's former cellmate stole them, and planned to sell them. This also is that person's brother. Nancy wants weed in exchange for the grenades, and it now is clear she plans to start selling again. I feel bad for Nancy. She really seems to believe the only way she can survive is to sell weed. She makes clear that she has no plan, and we know she means that selling weed is all she's really good at, and all she really knows. She gets talked into smoking a joint, and you know this will be bad. In the past Nancy never has been all that interested in using, only selling.

Silas has gone to modeling agency, and while they are not impressed at first, his charm, pathetic history, and nice ass get him closer to a job. I predict he will have success in this business since he's the only one who is even close to normal in the family, and he is a good looking young man. Meanwhile, Ed tells Shane and Andy that when people come out of prison they are different, and to expect Nancy to be changed. Other than smoking the joint she doesn't seem all that changed to me, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I'm thinking it's a VERY bad thing. As for Doug, he met up with friend from college, and it's clear he's going to get back in the game and launder all kinds of money. When Nancy returns she greets her family and clearly is stoned. Ed notices this and drags her off for a drug test. This will not be good, but she'll get out of it cause she always does.

A few fun scene for sure. Andy finding the "cookbook", Nancy smoking, Doug destroying that guy in racquetball, and of course Ed searching unsuccessfully for a rhyme for "trauma". I think what I most miss about the show is the simple nature it used to have. Nancy was a small time weed dealer in Agrestic, California. It was a study of suburbia, and how odd everything is everywhere. The drug aspect was almost secondary. Now, it's not a study of anything other than a crazy family. I'm not sure they'll be able to get back to that, and I will surely miss it.
