Favorite Scifi/Fantasy Movie -- Back to the Future
I do love this film, and the entire trilogy. When I was young BTTF 2 was my favorite, and I kind of dismissed BTTF 3 as a huge fall off in quality and story. Wow, was I an dumb little kid.
They all are truly amazing for different reasons, but at the same time they all hold the same basic messages. Simple things like friendship and loyalty, and complex scifi things like time is a thing not to be messed with.
I've heard from a lot of people that Back to the Future is not actually Marty's story, it's Doc's. Marty is simply the protagonist that helps Doc find his way. I like this idea. By the end of the series, Marty is pretty much the same guy. Maybe he's more serious about his life, and by the end of the third film he's realized that being called chicken really doesn't matter at all. But Doc changes completely. He's still a kind man, but his view of himself, life, and science are changed forever.
When we first meet Doc he's a crazy mad scientist who has come to see Marty as a friend/son-he-never-had. His original plan was just to have Marty there to record his experiment, and he would then go in to the future without any concern of the harm time travel could do. He steals plutonium from terrorists without any real concern about where that could lead, or who could be harmed because of these actions. Doc is, for lack of a better word selfish.
By the end of the series, Doc plans to destroy his life's work, and even is content to remain in the past in an attempt to prevent further time travel disasters. Then, in a final act he gives up going home with his friend to save the life of the woman he loved, a woman who earlier in the film he was furious she had been allowed to live due to their interference. By the end of the series, Doc still cares about and loves science, but now his main focus is to live his life to the fullest.
This is only one of many reasons why I love Back to the Future, and I plan on doing an extensive series on the film series on the Flashbacks Podcast in the future.
